Here's one more reason to be glad those 2012 Maya doomsday worries didn't pan out — Maya scholarship, thankfully, just kept on going. An international archaeology team, for example, reports that a well-known Maya ruin site had its origins further back in time than anyone first supposed. The calibrated dates from the 1995 Old Kingdom pyramid samples tended to be 100 to 200 years older than the historical dates for the respective kings and about 200 years younger than our 1984 dates. The number of dates from both 19 was only large enough to allow for statistical comparisons for the pyramids of Djoser, Khufu, Khafre, and Menkaure. First, there are significant discrepancies between 19 dates for Khufu and Khafre, but not for Djoser and Menkaure.Nonetheless, other scholars disagree and believe instead that after the 10th century Uxmal did see a decrease in population; with some saying it became nothing more than a site for pilgrimage before the Spanish conquered the region. One area in which most people are in agreement is that after 1000AD, when the Toltec conquered the Yucatan peninsula, Uxmal became a part of the League of Mayapan. In 2010, Bey and Mexican archaeologist Tomás Gallareta Negrón of INAH reported that artifacts left at Kiuic indicated the site had undergone rapid abandonment around 880 A.
In 1984 we thought it was unlikely that the pyramid builders consistently used centuries-old Egyptian wood as fuel in preparing mortar.
Earlier discoveries at the site included grinding stones left tilted against doorways, kitchen implements left stacked in rooms and remains of ancestors left behind that Maya traditions would have typically seen as needing removal if a place faced permanent abandonment.
Instead, it looks like the residents just left, expecting to shortly return. "These were the Maya middle class, and they were doing well," Bey says.
