An analysis by Heather Graven, a climate-physics researcher at Imperial College London, finds that emissions from fossil fuels are artificially raising the carbon age of the atmosphere, which makes objects today seem much older than they are when scrutinized by a radiocarbon dater.“Combustion of fossil fuels is “diluting the fraction of atmospheric carbon dioxide containing radiocarbon,” Dr. “This is making the atmosphere appear as though it has ‘aged,’ or lost radiocarbon by radioactive decay occurring over time.”The way radiocarbon dating works is by measuring the amount of carbon-14 decay, or how much the fraction of carbon-14 versus non-radioactive carbon has changed in an object.
The older an object is, the less C-14 there is to be detected.
Al Gore is the former Vice President of the United States (1993–2001), the 2000 Democratic Party presidential nominee, and the co-recipient of the 2007 Nobel Peace Prize with the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change.
He has been involved with the environmental activist movement for a number of decades.
Unfortunatly no-one can predict exactly how much time we have to try and turn this around or in fact what the true impact will be.
The effects expected are: We have already seen evidence it is happening, the polar ice caps are melting, flooding is a regular headline in the news around the world, and the weather is already showing signs of becoming eratic.
The world's forests are being destroyed; an enormous hole is opening in the ozone layer. In 1990, Senator Gore presided over a three-day conference with legislators from over 42 countries which sought to create a Global Marshall Plan, "under which industrial nations would help less developed countries grow economically while still protecting the environment." As Vice-President, Gore was involved in a number of initiatives related to the environment.
He launched the GLOBE program on Earth Day 1994, an education and science activity that, according to Forbes magazine, "made extensive use of the Internet to increase student awareness of their environment".
After Vietnam, as I was entering divinity school, the Club of Rome report came out and the limits to growth was a main issue.
The increased levels of CO² in the earths atmosphere have created a greenhouse effect which is warming the earth.
The earths atmosphere was designed as a protective blanket to keep the earth warm however the excessive greenhouse gasses have added to that blanket making the earth warmer than intended.
The method was developed immediately following World War II by Willard F.
Libby and coworkers and has provided age determinations in archeology, geology, geophysics, and other branches of science.
